PANGUR BAN
Letterfrack
Located in a restored cottage, Pangur Ban is a small, cozy and intimate restaurant which welcomes you with a warm fire blazing. The food is excellent, the service friendly and efficient. The proprietress is usually there to see that all goes well. (She is a Connemara native who lived in the States and married a New England Yankee -- whose paintings hang on Pangur Ban's walls.) The restaurant is pricey, but highly recommended.
J. J. O'MALLEY'S
Westport
Great "craic" for young and old. A mix of food for those who have developed a taste for Ireland or for those looking for broader fare. J. J. O'Malley's is especially easy with the children.
ROSSLEAGUE MANOR
Letterfrack
Noted for its unmistakable pink color, Rossleague Manor offers a feel for formal Irish dining. Rossleague Manor is located high on a hill overlooking a small lake outside Letterfrack. The experience allows you to become the "Lady and Lord of the Manor," as you sit by the fire in the drawing room, sipping cocktails, and ordering dinner. When the first course is to be served, you will be escorted to the dining rom. The dining room is a bit formal, but when here you are "to the manor born." The meals are beautifully prepared and delicious. After dinner, you can take coffee in the conservatory and mingle with other guests. As might be expected, this experience can be expensive.
STONEY'S
Clifden
Excellent food with an interesting view of the harbor of Clifden. Fish dishes are superb. Located near the fountain at the center of town.
VELDON'S
Letterfrack
Veldon's is an easy place to stop and enjoy some traditional hearty food. Good for lunch, dinner or just a pint. Moderately priced. In fine weather you can eat at picnic tables outside the pub.
RENVYLE HOUSE HOTEL
Renvyle
A visit to
Renvyle House
is always an interesting experience. Once the home of Oliver St. John Gogarty, it was
frequented by artists, writers and the literati of the day. W. B. Yeats spent his
honeymoon there. The corridor of the main floor is lined with historical memorabilia --
photos, letters, etc.
The dining room serves wonderful meals -- nothing too exotic but good, fresh ingredients
attractively presented. The waiters and waitresses tend to be young, energetic and eager
to please. On weekends there may be a pianist playing during dinner.
The small pub is a friendly place and also often has live music on weekends.
PORTFIN LODGE
Leenane
The Portfin Lodge overlooks The Killary and is surrounded by gardens. The restaurant is very attractive, has several rooms, and lots of windows -- very bright and cheery. The food is very good and the service is friendly and efficient.
COYNE'S
Tullycross
A traditonal Irish pub, Paddy Coyne's offers limited fare but interesting company.
