THE IRISH PIRATE QUEEN
Gráinne Ni Mháille or Granuaile (Grace O'Malley) was the famous Pirate Queen of Connemara. The daughter of a local chieftan, Granuaile grew to lead raids on innumerbale numbers of trading ships. Luring them into the waters in front of Carnmore, she used her extensive knowledge of the local shores (and rocks!) to destroy and then ransack her prey. Her exploits led her to an audience with (and eventual pardon from) Queen Elizabeth.
HISTORY OF THE IRISH
Ireland is known for its gifted story tellers. A fun way to spend an evening at Carnmore is to read aloud one of the Irish fairy tales. Local legend also has that the fairies still live on the small grassy hill on the north end of the beach .... so mind yourself when near there!
